Love it or hate it, gingerbread ice cream was a surprise hit in 2024.

But this year it may be harder to come by, and fans of the festive treat are not happy.

The controversy began when Aldi shoppers began wondering if the discount grocery retailer’s $6 Christmas Favourites Gingerbread ice cream would be back in 2025.

One fan of the gingerbread ice cream said on Reddit: “I bought it on a whim just to try, thinking if I didn’t like it, I’d only wasted $2.50. OH. EM. GEE. It is so good!”

“This reminded me of the Christmas pudding ice cream they had about a decade ago. Don’t know if it’s still a thing, but it was AMAZING,” another said.

Not everyone is a fan, finding it too gingery and spicey, but there are other plenty of other festive flavours they can choose instead.

We reached out to Aldi to ask, and were told it wouldn’t be part of this year’s range.

Instead, Aldi has confirmed the following ice cream flavours will be sold over the festive season.

Specially Selected Lemon and Hazelnut Gelato selling for $5.99 for a 500ml container.

The Speculoos ice cream will also be back, and a new flavour, Irish Cream, has been added to the line up. These cost $4.99 for 475mls.

Speculoos is the most Christmasy flavour from the range. It is caramel and cinnamon cookie-flavoured gelato with speculoos cookie crumbs.

These are Belgian spiced shortbread cookies, traditionally made with a mix of spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and ginger, and often have a caramelised flavour.

Aldi is also selling their Reindeers On The Run and Santa Swirl ice cream flavours for $6.99 for a litre.

Connoisseur Butterscotch & Gingerbread ice cream is also in doubt for 2025.

This popular alternative was sold at Coles, Woolworths and IGA in 2024 but so far it is listed as “out of stock” at all three retailers.

Redditors would be happy with this offering for the festive season.

“I tried the Connoisseur Butterscotch & Gingerbread … it was incredible actually. Very nice flavour & texture in ice cream.”

Connoisseur normally sells for $12 per litre but they run regular specials over the warmer months.

Nine.com.au has contacted Peters Ice Cream, who own the Connoisseur range, to ask if it will be returning this year but are yet to hear back.

We had hoped Coles would come to the rescue. They have previously sold Coles brand Christmas Gingerbread with Spiced Biscuits ice cream at $5 for a 473ml tub and Gingerbread ice cream sticks with Caramel Ripple.

Sadly, they confirmed their gingerbread ice cream is also off their festive list. Instead they have Christmas Salted Caramel and Brandy Snap Ice Cream which first made its debut in 2023, and Coles Christmas Spiced Rum Fig And Mascarpone Ice Cream.Buy Coles Christmas Spiced Rum Fig And Mascarpone Ice Cream 1L | Coles

So the only hope is Connoisseur.

There are plenty of Christmas treats to tide Aussie shoppers over in the meantime, with Coles, Woolworths, Aldi and IGA releasing their festive food ranges with fun flavours.

This year there is also a focus on time-saving products such as frozen seafoods and new dessert flavours, as well as fun novelty items such as Coles’ Gingerbread Train Kit for $15.
