Just got into sardines, so I bought some from the local store. Which would you pick first?

  1. Bumblebee, Brunswick, KO in plain EVOO, Seasons, KO Mediterranean EVOO.

Maybe seasons as 3rd instead of 4th but that’s personal preference.

A proper buildup from mid to best taste.

I tried the King Oscar expecting them to suck because they’re just a cheap brand you can get in any grocery store and they were surprisingly good. Great value.

IIRC, Brunswick makes a great product, but it’s been forever since I had them so I really shouldn’t weigh-in.

King oscar is best grocery store brand, bumble bee probs worst, or maybe seacliff

Bumblebee isn’t great, but I love all sardines. The others are all amazing imo

Season makes a great sardine at an outstanding value. $2.69 USD where I am and I like it better than Oscar. Good size filet, flavorful and nourishing.

I would compare the neutral flavors and enjoy the rest alone in my den surrounded by my Fishwife cardboard collection and jars of saved sardine juice next to my throne made from empty sardine tins and three rice cookers.

I like both KO’s. I personally don’t like the mustard. I like eating them with saltines or pork rinds.

I’m a sucker for any sardines in mustard, but those KO Mediterranean are so good as well… it would be a toss up between those two for me.

I did not like the bumblebee deens in mustard, they use sweet yellow mustard!! What the fuck!!

King Oscar are a great pick though.

The Season ones in plain olive oil are better than I expected. Sure flavors are great but the subtle sweetness and natural flavor coming through is addictive. I buy them in bulk packs at Costco, and they’re always great.

If you want the health benefits of them, but find them a little gamey, try this: mash them all up in a bowl and add some mustard, a finely diced shallot and some lemon juice.

I do this and put it on toast or crackers. It tastes a lot better after 24 hours in the fridge, the shallots really have time to work their flavour through the mix.
