First time growing carrots. Planted them way too late and then a deer or bunny got to them. I decided to end their misery today. Tips for next time?

Mine looked like that the first year, too!
This year I started earlier, put them in an out of the way raised bed, brand new fluffy soil, chicken wire over the top, fertilized a few times and I got carrots! Next year I’ll fertilize more and start even earlier. Start early, feed regularly and protect them from wildlife (squirrels in my case) and you too will have carrots!
