If you can’t decide on your own how much onion belongs in your food, even when based on someone’s suggestion, I doubt any amount of reading will help.

I mean more onion isn’t going to bother me.

I don’t like halving anything and always put my whole onion in it.

You measure how much onion you want in your recipe with your heart. Like garlic. Duh.

Our rule of thumb – There is never enough onion

Ugh, can’t edit the post once it’s posted, it seems. I’m definitely also team moar onions, but I’ve always wondered why recipes are very non-specific about onions. And also the fact that someone bothered to write a think piece about onions sent me

The must mean half a bag

When it says half an onion, it just means a whole normal sized onion.
When it says a whole onion, it means the biggest sucker you can find.

I must have an issue with my eyes, because when I see onion in a recipe, what I see is “as much onion as possible”

You know what half an onion is? An edible toothpick.

Recipes like that are being silly.

Depends on how much you like onion in your food. Some like it to add flavor and not specifically taste it and others want to rub it in their eyes and brain. Use to your taste.

This is why I’ve really been into measuring things with a scale.
Aside from that: half an onion would be what I chop to put on top of the food that already contained cooked onion. If I’m cooking, almost always a full onion.

Half an onion is 100% of the largest onion I can find

1/2 onion = 1 onion, same as one clove of garlic = two or 5

Doesn’t matter, if the recipe calls for half you know we are using a whole. I only buy large onions
Rodrat
If I’m strictly following a recipe or even trying to make one I always measure my food, preferably in grams.
The half an onion and other similar ones always kills me because the sizes vary so wildly.

Half an onion is 50% too little onion
