Tucked behind a suburban neighborhood in Oregon City, Villa Catalana makes you feel like you’ve taken a trip to Europe – but without the long flight.

Owner Burl Mostul built the Romanesque winery structure after being inspired by San Clemente de Taüll, a 12th century church in Spain. Mostul built the main structure himself, with a crew of five, and has since expanded to other projects around the property.

The winery has extensive grounds that guests are encouraged to explore, with wine glasses in hand. Mostul described the experience at Villa Catalana as a “strolling winery.”

The property also has “lots of gardens,” Mostul said. He also maintains the Rare Plants Research nursery at the site.

Villa Catalana is one of Oregon’s smallest wineries, producing about 500 cases of wine per year. The winery offers 10 varieties of wine, including Spanish varietals like Tempranillo and Garnacha (Grenache).

Pizza, prepared in the winery’s outdoor wood fired oven, is also available for purchase.

If you go:
