This has been one of my favorite sweet treats since childhood and is a staple in any Italian household. It has to be total apple cake. To start, peel all of the apples. Chop four of them into small cubes and then cut the rest in half moon slices to put on top of the cake. To avoid them turning brown, I’m going to squeeze some lemon juice on top. Mix it all together to make sure the lemon juice is coating all of them. In a large bowl, I’m going to add the sugar and crack in the eggs. And then whisk them all together until well combined. Then add the melted butter and the milk and whisk it all together again. Then sieve in the flour and the baking powder. And now add the zest of the whole lemon. Add the vanilla extract and give it a good mix until you reach this consistency. Finally, stir in the chopped apples. Pour the mixture in the cake tin. Layer the apple slices all over the top starting from the outside all the way in. To get the apples nice and caramelized, sprinkle a little bit of sugar on top. Place it in the middle shelf of the oven and bake it until nice and golden all over. Remove it from the tin and let it rest for at least 15 minutes. Sprinkle it with icing sugar all over before serving it. I love that it’s sweet, soft, and packed full of apples. Whatever you enjoy it for breakfast or serve as a dessert, it’s absolutely delicious. If you want to make it as well, I have the recipe in my new cookbook, Eat Like a Sardinian, Lift 200. Enjoy everyone.

  1. Amazing! I’m German and my grandma makes the same cake down to the cubed apples in the batter and the sliced ones on top. It’s everyone’s favourite cake!

  2. This is a wonderful recipe. I know this cake and I add 3-4 tablespoons of raisins to the batter. I prefer rum-soaked raisins, but that's not suitable for children or people who don't want to consume alcohol.

  4. i'm 'afraid' this is a family channel… i wouldn't mind having YOU for breakfast… and dessert… and breakfast the day after

  5. I'm egyptian and my grandmother and mother made this growing up. pretty muhc the same recipe except ours had grapes too!

  6. Someday, switch the lemon for the lime. The lime has the same effect as the lemon in preventing oxidation but it gives the apple a nice sweet flavor that you wouldn’t normally get with a lemon. The grocery store clerks think that I make a lot of margaritas, but, no. I simply love the effect lime has on some fruits.
