Zach Thorp, co-owner of Lot22 Olive Oil Co. in Redlands, will present “The History, Growing and Benefits of Olives and High-Quality Extra Virgin Olive Oil” when the Redlands Horticultural and Improvement Society meets Thursday, Nov. 20.
The community is invited to the program, at 7 p.m. at the Redlands Church of the Nazarene, 1307 E. Citrus Ave.
Thorp and his wife, Andrea, have been planting, growing and milling olives in Redlands for extra virgin olive oil for more than 15 years, according to a news release from the Redlands Horticultural and Improvement Society.
In his presentation, Thorp will discuss the history of olive trees in the Redlands area, the process for growing and making extra virgin olive oil and benefitsof extra virgin olive oil in the diet.
He is a certified olive oil sommelier through the International Culinary Institute in New York and a certified olive oil sensory analyst through UC Davis, according to the news release.
Andrea Thorp has worked with UC Davis to develop pruning techniques, and the Thorps have recently worked with UC Riverside to develop a citrus olive oil unique to citrus fruit grown from UCR’s agriculture program, according to the news release.
Lot22 Olive Oil Co. has won gold and best-in-class medals at the Los Angeles International Extra Virgin Olive Oil Competition and gold medals at the New York International Olive Oil Competition.
