LYNCHBURG, Va. (WSET) — As the holiday season is right around the corner, Lynchburg Water Resources (LWR) and Bedford Regional Water Authority (BRWA) are teaming up to encourage people to dispose of cooking oils and grease properly.
LWR and BRWA are giving away free grease disposal kits to help families protect their pipes from greasy buildup as they are cooking this holiday season.
When grease is not disposed of properly, it solidifies inside the sewer pipes. It will then mix with items like paper towels and wet wipes, creating what is called “fatbergs.”
The fatbergs block sewer lines and create backups and overflows, often proving to be costly fixes.

The free at-home grease collection kits will be available at a variety of locations. The kits include a funnel, can lid, sponge and dish scraper. Collected grease can be returned in sealed containers at the collection bins available at participating drop-off locations. The grease is then recycled into an environmentally friendly biofuel.
According to LWR and BRWA, you can pick up the kits and drop off the grease at the locations listed below.
