I was adding charcoal to my smoker and found this in the old charcoal. Anyone know what it is? I use lump charcoal.

Hopefully they didn’t make the charcoal with railroad ties

I’ve found steel shavings in briquettes before, but not *that much* supplemental iron.

Contact your provider, try to find the package it was from, or when/where you purchased it. It’s worth at least a few coupons + a cool story. Find a blacksmith to make it into a handle for a grill tool.

  3. I’ve stopped buying lump as it’s all gone to crap.

    Mmmm, railroad tie charcoal!

I think this stuff is entirely unregulated so it’s possible?

People always joke that most bbq pellets are recycled building material

  6. Drop the brand. They deserve to be shamed 👇🏼

I really hope this is a shitpost because if they’re actually using old railroad ties to make charcoal they’re poisoning every person who uses it with creosote.

Lol definitely a railroad spike. Maybe that’s a sign to stop buying that brand.

Must be cowboy brand they always have random shit in it

    Must be Royal Oak.

I’ve see plenty of clean cut trim in the 2 blue bags I bought over 30 years because of lack of anything else on the shelf…..but never a railway tie.

Regardless of any health critiques…. you probably got less charcoal too if it’s by weight. Figure that heavier than Charcoal and could throw off the weight??

  12. I’ve heard of spiking drinks but now BBQ? What is this world coming to?

Self lighting creosote charcoal? Good on you for posting, bad on them for an obviously poor product.

That’s a spike used to tie train tracks to the railroad tie. If you have charcoal made with railroad ties that is not good. Those things are soaked in creosote.

Natural lump no? Made from old hardwood railroad ties

I believe your lord and savior jesus christ may have been mixed in with that charcoal.

That sir is a railroad spike.. most likely your charcoal brand used railroad wood to make the lump charcoal.

Cowboy has spikes, Royal Oak has rebar…

Normally charcoal is for steaks, not the other way round.

What brand? Rather not smoke my food with old raoilroad ties.

  21. Ambitious-City15

Does your food taste like creosote?

Whew! You couldn’t died if you swallowed that!
