Las Vegas (KSNV) — The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department is investigating a small explosion that occurred outside a restaurant near the Las Vegas Strip on Thursday morning.
In an update provided by LVMPD Sheriff Kevin McMahill, at approximately 2:19 a.m., two men dressed in all black were observed arriving at Piero’s Italian Cuisine, located at 355 Convention Center Drive.
One of the males, who was riding on a scooter, walked up to the front of the restaurant and placed an ‘improvised explosive device.’
The device was ignited, and after burning for several minutes, it detonated, causing damage to the unoccupied building.
McMahill says that police weren’t advised of the incident until about 10 a.m., when a cleaning crew came in and alerted authorities.
An investigation is now underway, involving agencies such as the FBI and the LVMPD’s counter-terrorism section. As of the update, the pair remains outstanding.
McMahill also emphasized that there is no threat to the community, despite the incident occurring near the Las Vegas Strip.
As of 1:30 p.m., traffic along the westbound and eastbound lanes of Convention Center Drive from Las Vegas Boulevard to Paradise Road remains shut down.
Motorists should avoid the area while police respond to the incident.
This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
