November 17, 2025 — A special tasting of Cypriot wines in London has brought renewed attention to the island’s rich winemaking heritage and its dynamic new generation of producers.

A total of 14 wineries from across Cyprus presented almost 60 wines to members of the media and wine trade at the Cyprus High Commission in London on Monday, 10 November 2025.

Cyprus — one of the world’s oldest wine-producing regions — has been crafting wines for over 6,000 years. Its distinctive terroir and indigenous grape varieties, including Xynisteri, Maratheftiko, and also the historic Commandaria, have long defined the island’s vinous identity. Once a pivotal stop on ancient trade routes, Cypriot wines have been enjoyed by kings, crusaders, and connoisseurs for millennia.

Today, Cyprus’s wine industry is writing an exciting new chapter. A new generation of winemakers is marrying centuries-old traditions with modern viticulture and innovation, producing elegant, expressive wines that reflect both the island’s sun-drenched Mediterranean climate and the cool, high-altitude vineyards of the Troodos Mountains.

Costas Dafos, Commercial Attaché for the High Commission of the Republic of Cyprus, said:

“The Ministry of Energy, Commerce and Industry, in cooperation with the Cyprus High Commission in London, proudly supports the export endeavours of Cypriot winemakers, underscoring the remarkable progress of the island’s viticulture sector. The participation of an excellent selection of wineries from Cyprus — already established in the UK or seeking new collaborations — together with the outstanding response from leading figures across the media and trade, stands as the clearest testament to this ongoing success.”

The event featured two masterclasses led by Demetri Walters MW, who commented:

“This week’s Cyprus Wine Event proved a resounding success with members of the UK trade, bringing together fourteen Cypriot wineries under one roof at the High Commission in London. My two masterclasses highlighted red and white wines that reflect the island’s long vinous history, distinctive indigenous grapes, unrivalled altitude, and unique terroir — as well as the passion of the men and women behind them. Cypriot wine has never been better nor more full of personality, and we want everyone to know it.” This dedicated tasting of unique Cypriot wines in the UK highly impressed on-trade and off-trade professionals, as well as wholesalers and wine experts such as MWs, wine writers, journalists and influencers, marking a significant milestone for the island’s producers.
