Italy’s culinary heritage and gastronomic excellence will be celebrated from tomorrow through Thursday evening in Malta with Italian Cuisine Week, featuring a series of events. Tomorrow night’s opening will be devoted to an “exploration” of Italy’s rich tradition of food preservation, organized by the Italian Embassy and the Italian Academy of Cuisine at the headquarters of the Italian Cultural Institute in the center of Valletta, opposite the Grand Master’s Palace, now the seat of the presidency of the Maltese republic.
Malta, although the smallest member state of the EU, among the 27 is the one with the strongest and most stable growing economy. Italy is its first trading partner. “And agribusiness is weight sector. The most recent data,” Ambassador Valentina Setta told ANSA, “show an unequivocal picture: in 2024 Malta imported about 1.93 billion euros of agribusiness from Italy, equal to more than 3,500 euros per inhabitant, a figure that will grow in 2025. This is a value that no other country in the world reaches: suffice it to say that Switzerland stops just above 3,100 euros per capita and the large European economies are between 400 and 800 euros. This supremacy is not only economic, but testifies to a deep relationship, based on trust, quality and an extraordinary integration between our supply chains.”
On Wednesday, the Italian Trade Agency and Embassy, in collaboration with Casa Artusi and the Institute of Tourism Studies, will host a culinary masterclass with chef Luca Malacrida of Casa Artusi. Malacrida will demonstrate to ITS students in Malta how to highlight “Made in Italy” excellence through authentic recipes featuring Parmigiano Reggiano and traditional balsamic vinegar of Modena. After the masterclass, eight students will compete in a cooking challenge, recreating the dish demonstrated earlier, under the supervision of a panel of experts chaired by the president of the Italian Academy of Cuisine.
On Thursday at 12:30 p.m., Chef Luca Malacrida will give a cooking show that will be broadcast live on Maltese public TV, where he will prepare an Italian recipe, using authentic Italian culinary techniques and high-quality ingredients. Later in the evening, an invitation-only business networking aperitif is planned at a large hotel in Valletta, which will offer a chance to connect and explore business opportunities in the restaurant and hospitality sectors. Also during the week, Comites (Committee of Italians Abroad), together with the Italian Chamber of Commerce in Malta and many Italian restaurants, will organize various initiatives related to Italian Cuisine Week.
