Goose & Gander, the beloved St. Helena restaurant known for its basement bar, cocktails and cult-favorite burger, will close permanently Dec. 20 after nearly 14 years in business.
The announcement was made Nov. 14 on the restaurant’s Facebook and Instagram pages.
“Even the best parties come to an end,” the post said. “After nearly 14 unforgettable years, we’ve made the incredibly hard decision that it’s time to close our doors.”
In the statement, ownership thanked customers, staff and the Napa Valley community for supporting the restaurant since it opened in 2012. The post called the restaurant “a hidden gem” that became the go-to spot for first dates, celebrations and regular weeknight dinners.
“It’s been such a privilege to be part of so many special memories — from proposals to first dates, New Year’s Eve celebrations, anniversaries, countless birthdays, homecoming, family dinners or just a regular Tuesday night in the bar for a Walter’s Manhattan & duck fat fries,” the statement read.
The restaurant encouraged regulars to visit before the final service. “We’re not quite ready to say goodbye yet,” the post said. “Please come in, bring your family and friends and help us support our amazing G&G staff.”
The post didn’t explain why the restaurant is closing. The Press Democrat has reached out to the owners for more details.
The restaurant sits on Spring Street in downtown St. Helena, operating out of the historic stone building that once housed Martini House. Over the years, it earned a loyal following and often appeared on lists of Wine Country dining recommendations. It also drew public attention in 2022, when Grammy-nominated musician Jonathan Butler posted on Instagram alleging he was racially profiled after dining there. Butler said a manager followed him to his car and asked whether he had “taken care of his waiter.” Goose & Gander later issued a public apology, which Butler said he accepted.
News of the closure spread quickly online, generating thousands of reactions and shares. Dozens of restaurants, locals and longtime patrons posted tributes.
“We love our friends at Goose & Gander and will dearly miss this wonderful, homey, delicious, and welcoming place,” wrote The Fink, a Napa bar. “One less fabulous spot for us to recommend our out-of-town guests.”
Kevin James, one of many longtime guests sharing memories, wrote: “My wife and I dined there when we got engaged and then again when we came back on our honeymoon. Both experiences were so beyond fantastic that we sent our nephew and his new bride there on their honeymoon. We are very sad to see you go, but so very grateful for the memories.”
Calistoga restaurant Evangeline offered a similar sentiment: “It is a testament to your talent, craft and professionalism that so many community members are devastated by this news.”
Despite the disappointment, many commenters said they are making last-minute reservations before the restaurant closes for good.
