LACY LAKEVIEW, Texas (KWTX) – A local BBQ business that started with a single smoker and lots of determination is celebrating a milestone: their first brick-and-mortar restaurant. But they need community support to secure a strong opening.
As a Wacoan of 44 years, self-taught pitmaster, and co-owner of Broken G BBQ, Anthony Walton knows that magic isn’t made in the moment. It’s created in the slow hours, behind a pit, in the heat of a fire.
He started BBQing 20 years ago, perfecting his craft in his own backyard and local kitchens. Then, he launched Broken G BBQ. He started serving his food out of The Backyard Bar & Grill in downtown, then secured a food truck at Barnett’s. Pivoting to full-time catering, the goal of a permanent location lingered as Broken G BBQ’s ratings climbed to 4.8 stars.
Now that slow-smoked dream is becoming a reality, with the opening of their first brick-and-mortar location at 417 N. Lacy Dr.
“When I look in here, it’s wild. It’s crazy but I’m excited. My heart races every time I drive by it. I come and drive into the parking lot to look at it. It’s a dream come true,” Walton said, peering in on the building.
The location features indoor and outdoor seating. New renovations will allow for guests to see Anthony cooking firsthand, right as they walk in.
“This is the first stop of, you know, people coming in, sitting down, and enjoying the food,” he said. “I get to talk to guests more. BBQing is great, but connecting with guests is my passion.”
Co-owner Ashley Daniel said they’ve secured the building, but need support with the startup costs in order to open in January.
“We’ve poured so much into Broken G that we have hit a little bit of a bottleneck, and we just need the community support to get past that last little hurdle,” she said.
