Hi. I know "best" is subjective and that there is actually a lot of good steak houses in Manhattan, but if you could recommend me the "best" in your opinion, I would be very grateful. If the steak house amongst its sauce have Béarnaise sauce, it would be a big plus. Thank you very much![](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B%C3%A9arnaise_sauce)

The Grill, though if you want Béarnaise sauce in particular probably Minetta Tavern and get the Côte de boeuf or Keen’s.

I haven’t been to Keens since it went under new management, but it was the best before then. I think Royal 35 is an underrated gem. Bowery Meat Company is absolutely stellar, but go hungry and get a steak and the Duck Lasagna to share. Generally speaking, I find it tough to go wrong with a steakhouse in NYC if you avoid Smith & Wollensky.

    Depends on your priorities imo:

    Gallaghers

    Hawksmoor

    Quality meats

    4 charles

    Wolgangs

would be my top 5 picks in Manhattan

  4. cute_polarbear

I suggest wolfgang for the traditonal style steak. They had been consistent every time I was there in the past few years.

  5. Status-Suggestion654

Delmonicos for a great steak and iconic space

    Hear me out.

There is this place called Forgione. 100% not a steakhouse, however, they have a porterhouse for 2 on their menu that is my favorite steak in NYC. Better than Lugers, American Cut, Cut, etc. in my opinion. All their food is great but the steak is still one of the best I have had.

If you want steakhouse vibes and classic steaks, Forgione is not the place. If you just want Ana amazing steak and other food and drinks, Forgione is awesome.

Try Vinyl Steakhouse it’s excellent. It’s on 19th and was great both times I’ve been there.

  8. MillyGrace96

Keens. Still great, has a unique vibe, and is one of the coolest restaurants to look around.

  9. The Old Homestead near Chelsea market, oldest steakhouse in Manhattan.

the best thing that could’ve happened to peter luger was the bozo pete wells wrecking them, their changing nothing, and it just becoming a more normal place to go for a fancy steak rather than somewhere you bent yourself into pretzels to get a table for. i have had as many disappointing steaks at keens over the years as luger, but only one place maintains its rabid fans which frankly are more for the room itself than the food imo. full disclosure i haven’t eaten at k(p)eens

    Depends on neighborhood

In midtown / CP South, Quality Meats and The Grill (not a steakhouse, but great steaks – get the pasta à la presse or the crabcake to start)

In Gramercy – highly recommend Hawksmoor, just a solid classic steak house

In the Villages – Bowery Meat Company (pretty solid spot, but pricey so relatively easy res) or 4 Charles (great spot, impossible res)

  12. No love for La Tete D’Or? I had the best steak frites I have ever had there a few months ago, and it was not crazy expensive ($58).

  13. Monkey Bar was really good last time I was there. I would for sure go there over Keen’s.

  14. Francisco-De-Miranda

Went to La Tete D’Or for the first time last week and it blows Keens and Peter Lugers out of the water. Everyone at the table agreed it was the best steak they’ve had.

  15. GhostOfGeneWildr

Delmonico’s for dinner, Peter Luger for lunch. Love em both

I just came here to see if anybody had the poor sense to recommend Sparks.

I’ve been to all the big boys except 4 Charle and Cote. And St. Anslem is my favorite. Second on my list may have to be Keens.

  18. ill_connects

Keens, Wolfgang’s, 4 Charles in no particular order.

  19. Not a steakhouse but the Minetta Tavern Cote du Boef is probably the best steak I’ve had in New York City

  20. Interesting-Cow-1652

Cote. There used to be a place called 212 Steakhouse but they closed

  21. People saying Keens must not have eaten there recently. I went last week and friend went twice. We got steak (Kings cut) and filet mignon and it was not good at all. It was dry and tasteless, with no flavor to it. I had better steak in Mexico City. Delmonicos and Peter Lugers were better for steak. Apps and drinks I would give it to Keens.

  22. joeyfratz

Smith and wollensky, esp for the wine dinner (after 8pm Friday to Sunday)

Thank you very much for all the suggestions. That’s what I love about NYC; you just have a lot of good options of almost anything.

Last year I went to Keens so I’m going to try this year another based on all your suggestions!

    Best regards,

  24. Del Friscos Double Eagle on NYC is fantastic. Have had it in Dallas and that one is not great.
Gallaghers is very good steak if you are used to old school service
Keens has great steak I did not like the mutton.

One question: what is the defining factor for you to call a steakhouse the best: the meat or all the other things like the appetizers, sides, desserts and service?

I ask because, generally speaking, wouldn’t all steaks in good reputation steak houses taste basically the same? Pardon my ignorance.

  26. Far-Place7858

Smith and Wollensky is the best. Keens close 2nd

  27. SecretYellow6431

The way that this gets asked once a week

  28. Royal 35 is really special. Surprised someone else knows it. Great wine list and the steaks are aged so there is a depth of flavor. Sides are all on point

  29. The Grill. Hands down. Plus a few drinks and the ambience, you’ll be solid.

Late to this and everyone will tell you Keens, and its been great but I haven’t been since new mgmt so can’t comment. I have always greatly enjoyed Strip House, particularly the East Village location. Any steakhouse in NY should have Bernaise, but strip house has some potatoes cooked in duck fat (IIRC) that I am a huge fan of, and a thick cut bacon side that is done to perfection. I’ve had some delicious ribeyes there, and enjoyed splitting the porterhouse for two with a friend a bunch of times. It’s also got like a high end hotel lounge vibe which I enjoy, a little bit less stuffy than some other spots, more of a rock and roll feel as opposed to light jazz.
