Visited the rural mountainside village of Takayama in Gifu twice now and will continue to sing the praises of the Ryokan Asunaro, some of the best food I’ve ever had. Brilliant food, facilities and a seasonal menu that changes with every visit. Stayed for a couple nights with family in 2018 and 2023. Worth the price and cannot recommend it enough to anyone travelling through the rural areas.

dinner at the onsen ryokan is one of the great pleasures in life. have a good soak then eat a delicious meal and go for another soak.
and then repeat it for breakfast.
