    I’ve watched her for years. Fun fact, her name maangchi – which is korean for hammer – comes from her time playing mmorpgs where she played a tank. I forget the name of it, but it wasn’t wow. I think it was guild wars?

    She and I lived in Columbia, Missouri, at the same time, back in the 1990s. I’m sure I saw her at Chang’s market, but unfortunately we never met. Chang’s was the only Asian grocery store in town, and it was owned by a Korean family, no less.

    She reminds me of my Italian American grandma. She grew her own vegetables, and frequented old school butchers and bakeries, but also knew how to do anything they did at home (just about). She’s where I got my interest in foods from all over the world, and recreating them at home, and in sharing them with family and guests. I remember her table as the most welcoming place I knew, and that’s the feeling I get watching Maangchi cook. She’s right up there with Julia Child, Jacques Pepin, Thomas Keller, and other greats who love to teach and started from humble/normal beginnings in my pantheon of cooking heroes.

    My favorite were her early videos, where she was very tipsy and funny, and it was really entertaining as she was starting out and figuring out her style. Maangchi’s recipes are totally solid and I really love how accessible she’s made Korean cooking. She’s a treasure 👑

    I love her, I learned so many successful Korean dishes & executed them nicely. And even experiment. Kimchi jjigae, kimchi fried rice, oi muchim, gamjabokkeum, I combined bibimguksu & jjolmyeon lol cause I was limited on the right ingredients. More to make & learn.

    I love her stuff too! Anytime I want to make a Korean dish she’s the first person I go to. Easy to make and absolutely delicious.

    My first dish that I made of hers was 김치찌개. I just remember that someone told me to try Korean beef noodle soup and samgyetang. I haven’t checked yet to see if she has a recipe.
