Surrounded by twinkling lights, carols sounding from speakers, and fellow shoppers balancing cocktails and shopping bags, searching for the perfect gift becomes an adventure at any of Chicago’s holiday markets. Exploring the markets has become a favorite holiday tradition for me, an annual chance to connect with artists from near and far and discover an array of treasures, including some of the season’s best eats and sips. Even if your holiday shopping is nearing completion, visit any of these markets just for the festive fun of it — and, of course, all of the flavors.
Christkindlmarket

This German-inspired holiday market has been drawing crowds to Daley Plaza for decades for festive shopping and eats. Now featuring more than 50 vendors from around the world, Christkindlmarket takes place from Nov. 21 through Dec. 24. I love taking in the charm of the red and white striped booths, and when hunger strikes, deciding between several market favorites: Helmut’s Original Austrian Strudel, German Brothers potato pancakes, and Baked Cheese Haus Alpine-style raclette. Be sure to try the German hot spiced wine — beyond the market’s two heated structures, it’s the fastest way to warm up — and comes in the market’s colorful, keepsake mugs.
Gateway to Learning Holiday Market

A fixture in the Lincoln Square neighborhood, this community day program provides vocational and life skills training for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, including at Dorothy’s Sweet Shoppe, the on-site bakery and cafe. Visit Gateway to Learning on Dec. 6 for the annual holiday market, featuring the most popular bakery items (my favorites are the brownies or kolaches), plus holiday specials like gingerbread, peppermint bark, and my go-to: peanut butter truffles. Then, stay for the entertainment — this year, the St. Ben’s Children’s Choir will perform at 12 p.m., and visits with Santa Claus are free from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
SAUCED Night Market

SAUCED Night Market shines a light on local, indie makers, and pops up at some of the coolest spots in town. Dec. 12-13, head to the historic Chicago Athletic Association to explore holiday goods from more than 40 vendors, including Barrovian Books, Cosmicos Pet Bakery, and Sophia Renata Pottery. Sip on Baileys or Casamigos while fueling up on pies from Pies of London and candies from Sour Streak — then, peruse edible gifts like hot sauce from Soothsayer and spice blends from Lemaster Family Kitchen.
Chicago Artisan Market

Enjoy holiday tunes, festive cocktails, and displays from more than 115 vendors at this pop up’s one-day stop at Fulton Market on Dec. 14. At the celebration of Midwest artisans across fashion, home goods, art, and food, Chicago Artisan Market shoppers get especially excited to stock up on gifts from Gindo’s hot sauces, Griffin’s bottled cocktails, and, my favorite: Crafian Artisanal Toffee (the pristine packaging is icing on the cake). Bring the entire family — admission is free for kids under 12.
Renegade Craft

This market curates an impressive lineup of small producers, including several food and drink vendors and artisans, the weekend of Dec. 20-21. Settle in with a cocktail (in the past, Renegade Craft has served hot toddies and other warm, seasonal drams), and enjoy the holiday music in the midst of the whimsical garland and winter florals that adorn the space. While strolling the stands, be sure to keep an eye out for some musts: snacks from Stellar Granola, honey from Bike a Bee, and a variety of salt blends from Beautiful Briny Sea.
