A new Mediterranean-style eatery is set to open in a Cornish town. Orto, a restaurant and wine bar from the creator of Little Ears in Newquay, is aiming to open on Chapel Street in Penzance next month.

After choosing to part ways with his restaurant partner at Little Ears, this will be chef Fred Goodrich’s first solo gig. The menu will be predominantly Mediterranean in style – hence the name “Orto” alluding to “vegetable garden”.

Orto will be offering snacks, handmade pasta, mains and desserts, which sit alongside a list of interesting wines. The restaurant, in the former Bakehouse site on Chapel Street, is currently being renovated to become a warm, contemporary space.

The team are now actively recruiting a restaurant manager, as well as chef and front of house positions. It is hoped that the restaurant will be able to open in November, although an official opening date has not yet been set.

Before moving to Cornwall, London-born Fred learned his craft in some of the city’s most prestigious kitchens including the Michelin-starred HIDE in Mayfair and Bonhams restaurant. Now based in Cornwall, Fred was the co-owner of Little Ears in Newquay, which opened in June 2024, before he decided to open Orto.
