Just started volunteering at a church food pantry. Could this indicate spoilage? Or is it normal for canned tomatoes to separate like this?

Separation is pretty common with tomatoes it’s not dangerous in and of itself. That said I would recommend not accepting home canned foods for a food pantry. You don’t know how those were made or if they were made safely.

I know that the person who donated it has the absolute best of intentions but for safety’s sake I wouldn’t give them out. You can’t always see or smell the pathogens that grow in home canned foods (botulism has no smell or taste associated with it).

Food pantries usually don’t accept home canned goods. This should be removed.
