this grill has been sitting in my yard for i have no idea how long, and I want to use it for my turkey. The top is obviously very rusty, but i’m mostly concerned about these little growths on the seams (mold maybe?) You think it’s ok to just clean with some vinegar and call it a day? or can I do that and maybe somehow tent my turkey with foil so nothing from the lid of the grill falls on it? Thank you!

Sincerely,
a 20 year old who’s never once grilled

  1. Why waste our time with this?

EDIT: Thanks for the downvotes. If anyone of you can look at this picture and think you would ever let food come in contact with it, please go ahead. Troll post got a troll comment.

Fire it up, burn it out. Spray some cooking oil down,  burn it again.  Thats what I would do

    Don’t bother with cleaning.

Load it up with charcoal and light it up. Hot. For a while. You are then good to grill, and you’d probably be fine without even doing that.

You can also use this opportunity to season your grates if they’re cast iron.

    Enjoy your grilled turkey.

Fire is your answer. If you want to apply a cleanser of some sort and scrub, go for it. Personally I’ve solved this type of issue by building a nice hot fire and let it burn everything off.

Heat it up as high as possible for about 30 min and then scrub out the grill once it cools.

If it’s not rusted through you’re good. As other have said, give it a good burn.

Trial by fire! The heat is on works. If I was bored I might give a steam bath first. With a feel candles lit, got the ambiance. No holes that I could see in the photo.

Yeah… you can still fire it up, but you may also consider to get a new fresh one

Interesting fact: everyone here is the product of generations that cooked on things that looked way worse than this.
