I heard on the radio Thursday was opening day for the new Mama Betty’s on Burnet so I made a pit stop. Got there about 3:30pm and every bar seat was taken except one so I slid in.
Happy hour menu has two quesos, flautas and taco platters for half-price. Also $7 house margaritas.
I got the chicken flautas for $7 (HH), was happy so see a pretty full plate with five hot, crispy fully dressed pieces.
Chips and salsas on the house. Bartender asked what I thought and I told it was good but could use more spice. He said they have spicier versions of their table salsas and brought me some replacements. Much better, the green salsa reminded me of Taco Deli’s doña sauce, maybe less hot but really tasty.
I was impressed by how many workers they had behind the bar. I counted seven people taking orders, serving or making drinks so there wasn’t much wait even with a full seats.
The restaurant has a companion cocktail bar next door called FoxTail. I went there next. Like the restaurant they are in soft open mode. Took the bartender’s recommendation and ordered a Trinidad Sour. Really nice citrus flavor, and the bar has a relaxing atmosphere. Enjoyed it. They’re working on a happy hour menu, bartender said they might roll it out on Monday. So I’ll probably swing by again and see what it looks like.
On this side of town I’m a fan of Casa Chapala and Vivo for this kind of food and drink. I’ll put Mama Betty’s/FoxTail in my rotation from what I’ve seen so far. Cheers!
