Bought my large egg off Facebook marketplace about a month ago. When I went to upgrade the new hinge system, I decided to replace the gaskets as well. Upon removal of the old hinge system and bands, I noticed decent chips to the lid that were previously hidden underneath the old bands. Wondering how much life my current lid has or if the chips will let smoke escape. No need to sugarcoat anything, just let me know how it is. Thanks!

  1. I use my BGE until it won’t cook the way I want it to anymore. I used to have one made in the 1970’s and the lower vent broke and couldn’t be replaced so I just used it like a grill until it had a catastrophic accident. I say use it if you can and fix/replace if necessary.

  2. You can definitely repair that without buying a new lid. Just clean the damaged area to remove loose ceramic, then use furnace cement or refractory cement (the same stuff used for wood stoves). Spread it into the chipped spots and smooth it out so the rim is level again. Let it cure for about a day, then install your new gasket on top. It won’t look perfect, but it will seal well and give the lid plenty of extra life.

Not at all, put a new gasket on it and you will have no problem. If the chipping was through the entire lip, then maybe.

But your Egg is fine, just needs a new gasket

I agree with the thought a little bit of patching could be done, with refractory cement. I’ve done ceramic repairs before that were much worse than this and you shouldn’t have a problem with it. Definitely replace your gasket and continue to enjoy it.
