Colombo’s Italian Steakhouse sits on the edge of Eagle Rock — technically not Pasadena, but spiritually close enough. It’s one of those rare restaurants where you walk in once and immediately think, “Why can’t this be on my street?”

A few months ago, I heard a radio ad describe the service as “friendly, not fawning,” and I couldn’t have said it better myself. Colombo’s is warm, welcoming, and refreshingly unpretentious — the kind of hospitality we’re all looking for.

This isn’t Dan Tana’s — and thankfully, neither are the prices. Vic, the longtime owner, understands value better than most. I’ve enjoyed some terrific steaks here. Not quite Arroyo Chop House — few places are — but for the money, Colombo’s continues to be one of LA’s truly great deals.

Happy Hour? They don’t need it. The drinks are right as is. Julie commands the bar on weekdays  — a Dodgers fan and one of the sharpest bartenders in town. Stephen (yes, spelled with a ph) takes over on weekends and keeps things smooth.

Colombo’s was long known for its live music, but that’s on hiatus for now. Even so, the room still has that classic, comfortable glow that regulars swear by.

Parking? Well, it’s “Eagle Rock tricky.” Leave the SUV at home or simply Uber — you’ll thank me later.

The menu is unapologetically Italian from top to bottom. Jamie Mejia — a teacher at High Point Academy — swears by the pizza, and he’s right. As for me, the linguini with Bolognese always hits the spot. Add the extra meatball — the same one from their famous sandwich — and you’ve got a dish worth driving for.

Colombo’s is the neighborhood restaurant we all wish we had – honest food, outstanding value, a bar that feels like a clubhouse, and service that’s – say it with me –  friendly, not fawning.

Eagle Rock may feel like a stretch, but go once and you’ll want to make it a habit.
