I just moved near the ocean and I’ve never seen them before, are they good? I’m so very tempted by the “Blu” brand as it’s $13 and HUGE, thanks!

You can eat it but it looks like pasteurized imported crab. I only eat Atlantic crab. In a pinch possibly Louisiana crabmeat.

I prefer the plastic containers. I only get jumbo lump for crab fried rice so I can enjoy the large peices. Fo crab cakes or whatever you can get the cheaper stuff.

Why they got the Old Bay in the cooler? Even in Colorado we keep it on the shelf next to the seafood section.

I’ve seen this Blu brand at my local Acme, a.k.a. Ak-a-mee in Philly speak. I’ve never tried it, but it is definitely imported, likely from Indonesia. Save for the Chicken of the Sea brand.

If you moved near the ocean, try to find a local supplier of fresh fish and see what kind of crabmeat they offer.

I think most of it is out of the Philippines. I bought a can of that shit once and it was full of shells and they call it blue crab but it is not Blue Claw crab. It is some other form of crab out of the Philippines called blue crab so they’re getting over on us.

It may be the same species.

But it’s weird, canned pap, and it doesn’t taste or feel the same as Chesapeake blue crab.
    Hat tip to Louisiana crabs.

I bought it and tried my best to make decent crabcakes out of it.

Reminds me of that whitefish “crab sticks”

No dice….. maybe for fajitas or a salad or pizza 🤷🏽.

I generally get mine at Costco or at a local purveyor in Baltimore.

Shitty imported pasteurized crabmeat?…not even as good a tin canned crabmeat

I don’t buy any fish or seafood from SE Asia.

If that Tilapia is running $10 a pound (if my math is correct) you are getting ripped off for everything. The salmon is obviously dyed. Can you find a better fishmonger near you?

If crab meat seems like a really good deal it probably is not great. I live in the Baltimore area and had local blue crabs this summer. They were very expensive. I think moderately inexpensive blue crab is imported and might not be the best quality.

I started reading the labels & found one from India. 😱 iykyk

  12. What state do you live in? What you are looking at is imported pasteurized blue swimming crab. Could be from Indonesia or South America. Its shelf life is one year from canning. If you’re on the coast I suggest visiting a local seafood shop and get some from fresh picked USA blue crab.

  13. HighlightUpstairs777

I’ve always used the different variations and never had any problems, better then the pack of shitty surprise seafood fake crab 🤷🏻‍♂️

Go for the canned crab, only lump or jumbo lump, might be from Asia but it’s still good.

  15. TioGato1961

I found the plastic container stuff to be fishy. Not in a good way.😕

  16. Trivisual

it is crabmeat. but as others have pointed out, if it doesnt say anything about species/origin, dont expect much.

  17. Content-Frosting6250

That canned crab is from a species native to SE Asia known as a blue swimming crab. The species name is portunus pelagicus. It’s Similar to our native crab but of lesser quality in my opinion. You can find our native crab pasteurized or fresh picked in stores up and down the east coast. The species is calenectes sapidus and will be product of USA, Venezuela or Columbia.

  18. I think a lot about crab “crab meat” meat. Is it real, how fresh, why not just catch one that drops his claws put him a tank with some friends. Maybe scare them with a fake shark let them drop their claws then collect them?

  19. misterjzz

Buddy, not sure if its been mentioned yet..

If youre by the ocean now, find a local spot (fish/seafood market) to buy from. At least its kept local. Not that these store options are ass but local is better if you can swing it.

I use the canned, plastic, or frozen stuff for crab fried rice or crab cakes. Maybe a seafood boulette. Basically recipes that have a good amount of seasoning.

  21. Engineer_Existing

I mean the salmon “looks” good idk though.

  22. randalldandall518

It looks like you are shopping at the grocery chain ACME. the fact that you moved near the ocean doesn’t mean anything for those products. The canned stuff is in all ACMEs and comes from all over the place. Go to a local spot if you are near the ocean. Or maybe the seafood counter fish is better at that ACME but again the stuff you circled has nothing to do with them being near the ocean.

  23. lowfreq33

Everything on those shelves can be found at most grocery stores all over the country. I can get almost every one of those products in Tennessee. Find a local seafood market, it’s worth it.

  24. TooManyDraculas

    Pasteurized fresh picked crab.

It’s often very good and the standard way to buy picked crab.

That said most brands, particularly things that are “huge and $13” are imported Asian blue swimmer crab. Portunus pelagicus or other Portunus species.

Not Atlantic Blue Crab, Callinectes sapidus.

Blue swimmer crab is just not as good, and the imported stuff is lower quality.

Look on the label for species or point of origin. If it’s imported from Asia or says swimmer, swimming, P. or Portunus on there anywhere it’s the cheap stuff.

If memory serves all 3 of those brands are blue swimmer. It can be decent, but not anything special. Better than shelf stable cans, but nowhere near as good as genuine blue claw.

  25. Firm_Juggernaut1252

i used to be a seafood lead at a grocery store. that type of stuff sits on the shelf until it’s marked down 10 days prior from expiration/sell by date.

  26. When I am too lazy to buy fresh blue crab, I just buy a container of this and eat it with brown butter.

…at least I did before this shit economy we are in. Its just imitation krab meat for me these days.
