    Lol at “no questions accepted”

Obviously bad translation, but funnier to think “no. Do not give us a question. You already know we’re not answering it anyway. So just dont even ask.”

The signs that say go away in English but come on in in kanji are my favorite. I just walk right in and greet them politely in Japanese.

    Edit: typo

I like anything that saves me the energy of asking questions.

I want various versions of this type of sign everywhere.

  4. Intelligent_Serve662

It’s an anti-tourist sign, most likely they’re not full and just don’t want any tourists

Honestly, really wish I could do this. Not only is it a total waste of time when the place is slammed, and occasionally would-be guests get violent or aggressive, but my heart hurts more when I have to turn people away dozens of times.

I live near Banff and we have signs in Japanese because we have so many Japanese tourists. Canadians would never in a million years post a sign like this 😂😂😂 but I totally get it.

They COULD be full legitimately. Katsu spot near me has a “Yo, limit your time at table, etc” policy and doesn’t do takeout or delivery.

Of course, they have a line out the door 30 minutes after opening

I tried to go to a restaurant in Japan once and they said it was currently all full. I asked if there was a wait time for an eventual open table and they just flat out said no, we don’t operate that way.

Is it possible it wasn’t full and they just don’t want foreigners? Maybe. But they are also a pretty strict, rules-based society. If it’s not gonna happen, that was on you for not planning better. And I can see how someone like me or worse badgering them with questions about wait times etc. can be annoying. Not everywhere is like how the Western world operates and that’s fine.

I’m sure this sign doesn’t apply to Americans. Probably only Canadians and British. I’ll just go in and ask…

  11. This is definitely just to keep foreigners away

  12. I’m half japanese, this isnt because they’re full its because they’re xenophobic racists.

I literally can not express how much Japanese people quietly hate everyone that isnt Japanese and get away with it. Even being half japanese, speaking accented japanese isnt enough for them. I still get treated very differently especially in more remote places in the country.

I prefer this to the place that told me 4 hours.

This should be displayed outside of Branson, MO and Estes Park, CO.

One of the many reasons my father disliked business meetings in Japan. They also hated when he attempted to speak Nihongo. Not sure why xenophobia is excused there, but I’ll honor their wishes and steer clear.

The majority of tourists do not familiarize themselves with their host countries etiquette and customs. I don’t blame these shop owners. Respect the sign and move along. Americans are the absolute worst when visiting foreign countries.

A sign at my local coffee spot, japanese owned, says “we may refuse service if values differ”

I almost wish there was an APP for tourists/foriegners so they could know which places WOULD take them— at least then there would be more options for them and less money for those that wish to discriminate.

  19. DeapVally

They just don’t want tourists, Japanese people only. It’s a known thing for many restaurants in Japan. This will never be taken down even if they are empty.

  20. Ok-Celebration9123

Japanese will be xenophobic racists and redditors will eat it and go wow Japan is so amazing !!!

We have a Japanese restaurant in my town that’s owned by the sushi chef, and his whole staff is him doing sushi and FOH, his wife cooking the rest of the menu, and some random high school/college kid working FOH/waiting tables.

It’s the best Japanese food in the area and people line up almost every day for the dinner service.

When the sushi chef gets tired of seating people/serving sushi or it’s just too full this is basically what he tells people lol.

Also if you order something and he feels it’s not gonna be good or you’re just ordering way too much he’ll tell you no lmao

  22. honestly I respect this and actually rather see this than wait 2-3 hours

  23. Mayarooni1320

Ngl if I ever own a restaurant I’m gonna be spiteful and put a sign saying ‘No Japanese’ in Japanese. 🤣

  24. Should do them a favor and print a Japanese sign and place it over the English one.

Surely, the locals need to know as well!

  25. Secret_Account07

Yes please start doing this in US. When I worked in service industry I never understood how line going out the door and ppl would still come in

    Ffs go eat somewhere else

This is in Pontocho, one of the five geisha districts in Kyoto. It’s a historical site with a lot of preserved buildings which are incredibly small in terms of the space inside. Pontocho is pretty ritzy, while being a pretty popular tourist destination in terms of it’s reputation, it’s far up there, head to head with the larger Gion Kobu district. Tourists go there for the historical feel, but the local businesses are not always tourist friendly.

Such a great culture. Going in a few months and I’m so stoked. I’ll be a good gringo.
