By now, you’ve probably realized that our city is on a roll when it comes to gastronomic offerings from all over the world, and we’ve just received a new global seal of approval: the prestigious La Liste, which is an aggregator that brings together the evaluations of hundreds of international guides and publications, has just highlighted seven Lisbon restaurants among the 1000 best in the world.
This distinction isn’t just a number; it ‘s confirmation that the capital has gone from being a “hidden gem” to becoming a heavyweight on the international fine dining circuit, competing side by side with other historic capitals in this sector, such as Paris, Tokyo or New York.
What is La Liste, and how important is it?
@alma.henriquesapessoa
Unlike the Michelin Guide, which relies on anonymous inspectors, La Liste functions as a “guide to guides”: its methodology is based on an algorithm that cross-references reviews from leading newspapers, specialized magazines and trusted guides from around the world.
Belonging to this list of nominees, even though it’s so vast (with a thousand winners), means belonging to the elite of the elite, being excellent, it’s not enough to please a critic, but above all to maintain a consistency that crosses borders and different evaluation criteria.
What is the secret of Lisbon… and Portugal?
@belcanto_joseavillez
Lisbon has consistently appeared on the best restaurant lists and has even increased its number of Michelin-starred restaurants to 14.
But what puts the Portuguese capital on this level of excellence goes far beyond the individual quality of the chefs and their teams.
In order to belong to La Liste ‘s exclusive list of the 1000 best restaurants in the world, Lisbon has three very important characteristics:
Exceptional raw materials Privileged access to fish and seafood from the Atlantic coast, considered by many international chefs to be the best in the world; Renewed identity There has been a clear move away from “copying” French cuisine. The award-winning restaurants in Lisbon today tell Portuguese stories, recovering forgotten recipes and indigenous ingredients, but in a contemporary “garb”; Service and hospitality While it’s true that there are still many gaps in this sector, with restaurants struggling to hire quality professional labor, it’s also true (since time immemorial) that the Portuguese “art of hospitality” always ends up guaranteeing good service, offering in-room experiences that rival any European three-star. Whenever a restaurant gets on La Liste‘s radar, the whole value chain benefits, from the wine producer to the fisherman who supplies the fresh catch of the day. And it is precisely this quality that the nominated restaurants are able to offer.
Of the 17 Portuguese restaurants featured in La Liste‘s 1000 best restaurants in the world, seven are in Lisbon or very close by:
Belcanto – 95 points Fortaleza do Guincho – 87.5 points Cura – 81,5 points Alma – 77 points Feitoria – 77 points Fifty Seconds – 77 points Marlene – 75.5 points
To be included in this distinguished and world-renowned list, to be among the 1000 best restaurants on the planet, is undoubtedly a remarkable achievement by our Chefs, placing national gastronomy in another dimension.
Whether through signature cuisine or more traditional menus with Portuguese roots, one thing has become undeniable: in Lisbon you can eat at the level of the best the world has to offer.
