GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) – One local business is cooking up something special this holiday season.

Spoons Bistro is preparing Thanksgiving meals for community members, continuing a tradition that began five years ago.

The restaurant offers fully prepared meals that customers can take home and heat in their ovens. Staff said the service helps people who may be dealing with medical issues or other life challenges.

Service targets elderly and smaller families

“There are plenty of people that need that little break. Maybe something’s going on in their lives so they could use, something medical might be going on. They could use a little assistance in that,” a Martin Marez, the executive chef, said. “It’s all prepared and all they need to do is pop it in the oven.”

The service benefits elderly residents and smaller families who want to avoid the shopping and preparation involved in cooking a full Thanksgiving dinner. The chef says it also gives families the chance to spend more time together instead of in the kitchen.

“I think just that comfort of not having to worry about going and shopping and getting all the ingredients that are needed, it’s all handed to them right then and there,” Marez said. “And so I think that really helps them feel peaceful during those times, because that’s one less thing on their plate… literally.”

Christmas meals available through Dec. 17Spoons BistroSpoons Bistro(KKCO)

The restaurant also offers Christmas takeout meals, which can be ordered until Dec. 17. Options include prime rib, beef wellington and traditional ham, with breakfast options also available. They can be ordered at spoonsbistroandbakery.com or by calling (970) 255-7237.

The packages include a meal and sides. Additional pies and wine can be added for extra charge. Spoons Bistro will be closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.

Restaurant supports HopeWest nonprofit

Spoons Bistro is part of the local nonprofit HopeWest. HopeWest provides care to hospice patients and their families across western Colorado. A lot of the funds from Spoons goes towards supporting the non-profit.

“I think, Thanksgiving makes us all think of gratitude. We especially are thankful for the community that supports us. We couldn’t do it without the generosity of others,” Olivia Barrett, a representative from the Hope West development team, said. “But I think it’s also a way for people to show gratitude to HopeWest. If we’ve touched somebody, somebody’s life, this is a really unique way to give back.”

The representatives said that Spoons has become a staple in the community.

“I think Spoons is really special because it is a place where you can gather. People visit and play games. They have coffee groups. There’s a veterans group that meets here regularly. Every week we’re seeing groups come back. And whether it’s through dining throughout the week, holiday pies, holiday meals, you are a part of something greater. It’s great food, but you’re also supporting the mission of HopeWest,” Barrett said.

The workers behind the mission are thankful for the support.

“Knowing that the community backs this place up so well. They know that when they come in and whatever funds they put in as far as ordering food, anything that goes that way, goes toward HopeWest, all of that is, to me, satisfying,” Marez said.
