Wanted to surprise my dad with something he would never buy for himself.

Opening sip. Figs, rum rasin, chocolate

Decant taste. Grippy tannins. Baking spice. Forest floor. Sweeter than I expected. Beautiful.

First time I have had anything like this. I love the nose. The well integrated tannis and structure. I can see why people love stuff like this. Makes me want to try something with more tertiary flavors.

Terrified while opening this. A stretch wine in every sense of the way. Dangerous though because this is like nothing else I have ever had.

Wonderful! I wish you, your father, and everyone else a memorable Thanksgiving!

Great, aged wines like this are always terrifying – or exhilarating, if you take it from that perspective. Not knowing if it aged well or if the cork has problems, then decanting.

But the reward can be absolutely ethereal!!

What a great way for you to surprise your father on Thanksgiving! You’re a very thoughtful and loving son. Well done, you!

  3. Awesome! Glad to hear the bottle was okay. If you’re looking for something in the same ballpark with more tertiary notes at a bit more reasonable price, I’d suggest older Pape Clement, Smith Haut Lafitte, and Pontet Canet. Happy holidays!

Hmm, maybe you should question the storage of where you got it from. ’04 shouldn’t be so heavily tertiary yet. the ’03 (admittedly very hot year) is still very fresh leaning.
