I don’t have a lot of experience with old vintage champagne. 2008 was the oldest I had ever tasted up until the other day. Ahead of our gathering, we knew a 1976 Dom Perignon was coming but the owner tempered our expectations as he said it’s a crap shoot with these ages…but what an opportunity to taste a 49 year old champagne. With this tasting, I will have skipped the 80s and 90s entirely.
Let me tell you…this was sublime.
Still some bubbles (not a lot).
The smell: burnt orange peel, honeysuckle, maple, caramel, pineapple. I spent more time smelling it than I did drinking it.
The color: An amber that I usually don’t associate with champagne.
The taste: Caramel, Baked Apple pie, faint nutmeg, a lil green vegetable.
I sat in my seat for a good few mins admiring. These are the wine moments we live for and one I’ll not soon forget.
