I did German Giants in the spring and French in the fall. GGs were much better but we had a hot dry fall here that made it tough on everything I planted this fall. Now that I’m planning for next year, what do others plant as their “go to”?

  1. So far it’s been watermelon radish. Hoping to try some new varieties next year

Daikon. The yield ratio to labor is out of this world. They get HUGE.

They taste fabulous raw or cooked (I like to sauté them in butter with garlic and onion), they break up compacted, rocky soil, they grow extremely well in cooler climates, and they can be used as a cover crop and left in place to compost and improve the soil.

I use them for all those purposes.

I like and grow other varieties of radishes, but it’s so easy to go walk out into my yard and fling a few handfuls of seeds around and then pull them at whatever point I want that I grow more of them than other varieties.

Plus, they taste great pickled, and the unripe seed pods are delicious, too.

Would love to hear some recipes y’all use radishes in. They’re so easy to grow but I just have no aquired a taste for them yet…

Sora > cherry belle all day. Nelson > French breakfast. Sora is the greatest salad radish of all time, and you cant convince me otherwise. For storage radish daikon for flavor, black Spanish for longevity. Then again, watermelon radish is such a stunner. I love all the radishes!

They are great in a pan sheet roasted veg combo! Like mini cabbages

For me China Rose grows by far the best.
