This bottle of 2012 Biondi-Santi (greppo) has been cellared since I brought it home from Tuscany in 2016-17.

At that time, I also brought bottles from different producers, which have all been well enjoyed or are confidently holding well for the next 5 years.

Should I continue to hold this bottle, or enjoy it at the next opportunity?

Hold. Biondi-Santi IS Brunello, they are literally the reason the DOCG exists. Look up the particular vintage but that should give you another ten years at least.

Biondi Brunello holds a long time! 25+ years easily in most cases (vintage dependent). I’ve had some over 40 years of age that showed surprisingly young. They’re really built for the long haul!

However, having had a 2012 earlier this year, I can tell you they’re drinking great right now. I expect it’s entering its drinking window, but will hold for another decade or more. There wasn’t a ton of sediment and it needed some air if memory serves me correctly.

I’ve opened 3 bottles of 2012 Riserva in the last 6 months and every one was spectacular. Could age longer for sure, but no need.

  4. Have a 2015 I’m sitting on until 2030… hopefully.

    I recently drank a 2003 – held up wonderfully

Probably could last quite a bit longer, but I had this exact 2012 bottle at a restaurant in October and it was just spectacular. I couldn’t imagine it getting any better than it is right now. Beautifully balanced and complex with notes of dark fruit, black licorice, and leather. There was also a lovely cedar and cigar box note that gave a touch of spice to the finish. It was one of those bottles that made me sad when it was finished. Enjoy it

Biondi-Santi technically produced the first wine to ever be labelled “Brunello”, and has been a benchmark of Montalcino’s best producers ever since. This is still a young wine, from a very good vintage—it will last for a decade or more if you store it properly. You can also drink it now, and it’s probably showing fantastically. You have a very special bottle there 🙂

I had a bottle of 1975 that I drank 25 years ago. I put tasting notes of that experience on CellarTracker and people are still writing positive tasting notes of that vintage today. So good vintages of Il Grepo can evolve for decades.

it’s probably at its peak right now but will last a good ten plus years longer

Probably good for 30-40 years from vintage date. Biondi-Santi makes some of the most ageworthy wines in the world. I have been lucky to enjoy many hundreds of B-S bottles as a a G2 Napa Wine Brat. This is probably a top 20 wine label in the world for me.

With that, i would drink soon, and buy more if i like/love it, with the expectation it will develop for 10 or more years without losing its edge.

  12. I’ve had 1983 Biondi Santi a few times in recent years and it was still holding up.

I’ve not touched my 2010s yet.

Biondi Santi in particular can hold a long time
