United Gospel Rescue Mission staff and volunteers served 2,300 Thanksgiving meals on Thursday, and the organization is now seeking volunteers and dessert donations for its upcoming Christmas meal.

The mission prepared 3,000 meals because of the government shutdown. Leaders were concerned families could be short on food and didn’t want anyone to go without a festive meal. While the numbers were lower than expected, the day was a success, said Mission Executive Director Rev. Dr. Greg Kirk.

“We had a blessed time, a good day,” Kirk said. “We had a very successful Thanksgiving. Thank you for coming, Poplar Bluff.”

Volunteers and donors came together to assist the Thanksgiving meal line and food deliveries, and Kirk is praying for the same at Christmas.

“Serving holiday meals is not a burden. We love to do it,” Kirk said. “We could not do it without the community involvement. It is a way the mission can give back to a community that, for almost 60 years, has held our hand while we reach the least, the last, and the lost with the gospel of Jesus Christ.”
