According to Top 50 Pizza, the world’s most important industry guide by its own account, the best pizza chain is none other than the one considered the birthplace of pizza: L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele. Does the name sound familiar? Just earlier this year, the traditional pizzeria in Naples was named one of the world’s most legendary restaurants by “Tasteatlas” (TRAVELBOOK reported). The restaurant gained worldwide fame, especially after its appearance in Elizabeth Gilbert’s book (2006) and the subsequent film “Eat Pray Love” (2010).

For those living in Germany, there are three opportunities to try the pizzas from this now world-renowned pizza chain: In Berlin on Fritz-Reuter-Strasse 7 in the Schöneberg district (currently temporarily closed according to Google, as of December 1, 2025), in Hamburg-Ottensen on Bahrenfelder Str. 177-181, and on Venloer Str. 658 in Cologne-Ehrenfeld. Additionally, the Neapolitan pizza creator now has numerous branches worldwide. Besides 36 locations in Italy alone, Da Michele’s pizza is available in 33 other places worldwide–from Amsterdam to New York, Abu Dhabi, and London to Tokyo.
And what makes the pizza from L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele so special that it is not only popular worldwide but also celebrated as the best chain globally? “Da Michele has remained true to the tradition of the ‘Cartwheel’ pizza–so large that it almost jumps off the plate–without a thick crust, with a light, melt-in-the-mouth dough, just as real Neapolitan pizza should be,” says the expert team of Barbara Guerra, Luciano Pignataro, and Albert Sapere from Top 50 Pizza. While the traditional restaurant in Naples, whose roots go back to 1870, has remained true to itself, the menus in other branches in Italy and worldwide offer a sometimes more extensive selection. According to the pizza experts, at Da Michele, appetizers like Montanarine and potato croquettes, other dishes such as Mozzarella in Carrozza or meatballs with ragù, as well as desserts including tiramisu, babà, and lemon delight, are also worth trying.
French-Italian pizzas in 2nd place
Second place among the 50 best pizza chains worldwide in 2025 goes to the French Big Mamma Group. Although it can’t boast much tradition with its ten-year existence, it also receives the award for the best cocktail list of the year from Top 50 Pizza. According to the experts, guests in the branches can expect “Italian cuisine, prepared with love and respect for tradition.” This includes a Neapolitan-style pizza: “well-risen and perfectly baked with a tender crust” and other classics “with excellent tomato sauce and, where appropriate, aromatic basil,” as the experts write. Top 50 Pizza also recommends the anniversary pizza “Hotline” with spicy sausage, ‘Nduja, and caramelized red onions, as well as the truffle pizza.
