Is this a pressure canner or cooker? Someone is selling on marketplace for a good deal but doesn’t know the answer- said she just used it for sterilizing grain bags. TIA!!

It looks just like my presto which is both a canner and a cooker.

You’ll want to replace the gasket and overpressure plug (this is annual maintenance – every year – they come together in one parts bag for about $20) and get the dial tested OR do what I did and swap the rocker for a weighted rockets

You would need to find out what the model number is. This looks like a presto appliance but they make both pressure canners and pressure cookers.

    yo keep her contact info

A pressure canner needs to be adjustable for altitude.

You may find pressure canners with:
    –A gauge,
–A set of weights (or a single unit with weights to select from, usually 3)
–Or BOTH a gauge and set of weights

The gauges can be hard to find, to get checked and keep accurate. Old canners (like my All American) had ONLY a gauge. These allow for more customizable canning heats (still up in the safe range) BUT they are hard to keep accurate/get checked. I took the vent petcock off and switched to weights which makes the gauge unnecessary.

Fussing with the gauge was a PITA. **The weight system is the more easy to to keep accurate**, and IMHO the way to go.

Please correct me if I did not explain correctly above. It has been a while since I have done this explaining.

Canner, probably Presto. You can cook in a canner, but generally can’t can in a cooker. Before making a commitment, ask for more pictures – the inside of the lid and pot, and accessories (it should have a trivet that fits inside so jars aren’t directly on the floor of the canner), a gasket, and an instruction manual. You can get replacement parts, but you should know what you’re getting into,

  6. It looks similar to our Presto 23 quart canner (gauge and wiggler weight), but smaller. That’s one criteria to look for; does it fit the height of a quart jar or 2 pint jars stacked on top of each other? And does it fit a number of quarts without significant gaps in between? If jars fit nicely, it’s designed as a canner. If jars don’t fit nicely, it’s probably a cooker.

That is a Presto Aluminum Pressure Canner. Look like a 23 quart model that can hold 7 quart jars or 20 pint jars.

For replacement part numbers for things like the seal or the pressure gage look here.
