It turns out Britain’s long-standing rivalry with France might actually be masking a national obsession.

New research from Asda shows that more than half of Brits (53%) would choose to be French if they had to swap nationalities — beating out popular European favourites including Italians (49%), Spaniards (44%) and Germans (15%).

As the UK prepares to celebrate Beaujolais Day on Thursday 20th November, Asda has launched a limited-edition bottle of Beaujolais Nouveau for just £7.47, landing in stores and online at the perfect moment. The fresh, fruity red is known for its vibrant flavour and early annual release, making it one of France’s most playful wine traditions.

Brits Admit: The French Are Classier, Sexier and Far More Sophisticated

Beaujolais Day: The Swansea Phenomenon

While Beaujolais Day is celebrated across France and beyond, Swansea has adopted it as one of its biggest annual events — some even call it their version of Christmas Day. Bars and restaurants across the city host themed menus, live music and all-day celebrations.

According to Asda’s data:

73% of girls from Swansea say they’ll be celebrating this Thursday
Over a quarter of Brits nationwide are planning to join in

To add to the festivities, Asda is hosting a one-night-only Beaujolais Beauty Bar in the wine aisle of Asda Swansea. Customers who purchase the new Beaujolais Nouveau between 5pm and 9pm on 20th November can enjoy a complimentary makeover ahead of the city’s largest night out of the year.

Asda Celebrates Britain’s French Crush

An Asda spokesperson said:

“Britain’s love affair with France shows no signs of cooling. From food and fashion to that irresistible accent, we’re embracing all things Gallic — and Beaujolais Day is the perfect excuse to celebrate in style.”

They added:

“We’re thrilled to introduce this beautiful limited-edition Beaujolais Nouveau. It perfectly captures the joyful French spirit our customers love — all at great value.”
