How does everything look so far? This is day 12 after planting from seed. Are my carrots too close? They were kind of just an experiment. I'm in Florida by the way.

Great job getting carrots to germinate as a newbie! That’s a challenge for many new gardeners. That said, yes, you 100% will need to thin them to get a harvest. You want about 2″ between each seedling that you keep. That spacing lets each taproot size up to a comfortable 1″ wide without getting tangled with each other.

Carrots are hard. I have issues growing them, so I can’t give advice on thinning.

But something to think about – you probably don’t own a tractor, so why are you planting in rows? This idea that everything has to be in a row is due to pictures of fields that will be cultivated and harvested by a tractor. As human beings with feet, not wheels, we’re far more maneuverable.

Plant in a block with room to get around to harvest or weed. You’ll use your space more efficiently.

I grow in beds that are 90 cm, 36 inches wide – I can comfortably straddle that bed to weed or harvest. In between the bed, the path is 25cm, or 10 inches wide – that’s all I need for a wheelbarrow.

I don’t grow carrots anymore as my carrots are always on the smaller/stumpier side. Rather grow what I always get huge crops of.

    Yeah- thin them out.
