In a battle of the Christmas desserts, it’s an enduring Aussie classic that has once again emerged triumphant.
An undeniably contentious topic (second only to the toss-up between pig and poultry) our latest poll has proven just how divided Australians are on sweet treats for the silly season.
It’s official: The beloved pavlova has clinched the top spot, with 29 per cent of respondents revealing it’s their go-to option for Christmas Day.

This may come as no surprise to Aussies, with the humble pav widely considered a non-negotiable Christmas staple Down Under.
However, Christmas traditionalists will be pleased to know there’ll always be room for Christmas pud, too – both in our stomachs, and on our tables.
The steamed dessert is still enjoyed by a loyal Aussie fanbase, tying with trifle for the runner-up position in our polls at 22 per cent each.
As one pudding devotee put it, “I love a rich brandy-soaked fruit pudding with a single malt whiskey to finish off a Christmas lunch.”

Another participant weighed in, saying they consider themselves “a real old fashioned traditionalist,” who “has to have homemade custard complete with skin on top and ice-cream with my pudding.”‘
But Australians evidently weren’t quite as enthusiastic about Christmas pud’s considerably less-popular cousin, with Christmas cake only managing to scrape a measly 9 per cent of the vote.
Mince pies, meanwhile, earned a dismal 4 per cent, which may indicate Australians see them as more of a supporting act than the main event.

And Italian favourite Panettone brought in only 2 per cent, though fans of the airy sweet bread might argue it deserves far more love than it gets.
Surprisingly, a notable chunk of our poll voters selected ‘other dessert’ – indicating 12 per cent of Aussies have lesser-known sweet options they swear by.
A few alternatives came through loud and clear in the comments, with one respondent declaring, “My Christmas dessert would be tiramisu.”
There was also a strong showing from cheesecake loyalists, with one responding, “I’m a cheesecake girl! And love a fruit platter.”

However another affirmed you can never have too much pud, simply stating they “have a few” preferences, and couldn’t narrow it down.
In total, 434 people took part in the poll, giving us a clear snapshot of which desserts take pride of place in Aussie hearts this holiday season.
