For more than three decades, Topher’s 10th & Elm Cafe has relied on the support of the community. As the Reading restaurant celebrates its 35th anniversary, owners Christopher and Holly Fisher want to return the favor.
“We are now in the position where the business can afford to give back to the community,” Christopher Fisher said. “And our family decided that the way we wanted to give back is to ensure other families in the city have a Christmas meal.”
Fisher said the goal with this inaugural event is to give 50 families all the ingredients they need to make a holiday dinner. While the exact items aren’t yet set, they will include a turkey as well as sides such as a bag of potatoes, stuffing, macaroni and cheese boxes, green beans and corn.
“Our hope is that we can continue this in the future,” he said. “It would be great if other businesses see what we’re doing and have their own giveaway so that we eventually get to the point where every family in Reading has a meal on Thanksgiving and Christmas.”
Fisher said families interested in receiving a box can message the restaurant through its Facebook page sharing why they or someone else is in need of help this holiday season. Submissions will be accepted through Dec. 18, with recipients being announced on Dec. 20.
