If hes making a mint julep thats kind of what it is just made in kind of a dumb quirky way. Bourbon, mint, simple syrup, crushed ice, and garnished with more mint that you slap to make it smell more minty.

It is indeed Japan and the bartender specialises in performance delivery of his cocktails. It may not be your thing, but he is focused and dedicated and is typically booked solid weeks in advance.

This is Yuzo Komai, a bartender (and owner?) at Bar Centifolia in Minato, Tokyo.
He’s a national cocktail champion and absolutely legit. I suggest watching some of his other stuff. This one is silly (the mess alone!), but some of his other cocktails are pure artistry.

Is this stupid, or is this just OTT flare for tourists and people splashing the cash? I don’t see anything unsafe here, and people going to a place like this are paying for the experience as much as anything else – how is this any different from a bartender in a London or New York cocktail lounge doing the whole ‘tossing the cocktail shaker’ thing? This is just a different technique. The only thing that’s bordering on stupid is the mostly pointless ice stuck on the outside of the glass. Sure, the price is probably ridiculous, but so are the prices in most high-end cocktail lounges.

I swear this sub is for folks who only drink swill and eat microwave dinners, because anything served with even a bit of effort is “stupid”. Most of the comments here are saying it’s mostly ice and yes, that’s the common way this type of drink is served (this is a classic cocktail – it’s been around for roughly 100 years). It’s the same amount of alcohol regardless of how it’s served.
If you drink alcohol only to get drunk and don’t care about the taste, you’re either a college student or an alcoholic.

I’d think less of anywhere not using crushed ice in these drinks.
