WEST ASHLEY — A restaurant with a fresh take on fast-casual dining recently debuted in this Charleston suburb.

Mazal, owned by Gal and Tal Alhadef, opened in October at 1901 Ashley River Road, previously occupied by The Crab Shack.

Situated between Christophe’s Macaron et Chocolate and Ashley Cooper Real Estate, the strip mall eatery specializes in Israeli cuisine, offering options ranging from falafel and shawarma to crispy schnitzel stuffed inside a pita pocket, baked cauliflower freshened by parsley sauce and french fries tossed in Mediterranean seasonings.

At Mazal, lunch or dinner will be ready in under 10 minutes. But the food is made-to-order, and most options can be customized.

Enjoy hummus the traditional way or adorned with grilled chicken, ground beef kebab or shawarma. Many of the signature menu items are inspired by street food in the Mediterranean region. The cabbage steak, for instance, is currently a very popular preparation in Tel Aviv, Gal Alhadef said.

At Mazal, the leaves are roasted until they’re tender, sweet and slightly charred. Drizzled with tangy tahini mustard and sprinkled with parsley, the supple half-crescents are just one example of how this restaurant strays from what you might expect to find at a fast-casual establishment.
