I’m new to cake decorating and have been experimenting with vintage style cakes. Any tips for how to get things cleaner? I’m struggling to get a nice shell going vertically down the sides of the cakes. Thank you!

Other than just a lot of practice, it’s my understanding that the detail on these types of cakes originally (historically?) were done with royal icing as that by far provides the best definition in the piping and you have more control over adjusting the consistency to make sure that happens.

But SMBC is obviously tastier and easier to create other flavors with so it’s a compromise that imho is worth it! Plus not having to make two different types of icings.

Your cake looks beautiful regardless. The vertical bit is always hardest for me too so hoping somebody else chimes in with some tips or tricks there!

Something about the lighting makes it look like the icing is made from velvet lol. Love the color and the cake looks beautiful!!!

I feel like a teeny little red heart on the cake, and its the perfect Grinch themed christmas cake

Your piping is lovely! If you’re referring to getting the base surface cleaner, a metal bench scraper and offset spatula with hot water will get you the smoothness you are looking for.

Keep a cup of very hot water and a towel next to you, allow the tools to heat up in the water, dry them, and lightly run the heated tools over the surface of the cake to smooth the frosting!

As I pipe my straight lines, they look diagonal, but they’re actually straight. You have to push your hand away a tad when you’re piping. I know this isn’t great advice, but it helps me
