Like most people, I usually default to Champagne (or Crémant) when the end of year celebrations roll around. But this year I opened something a bit left field: a Brut Nature sparkling wine from Château Rouanne in Vinsobres, owned by Château de Saint Cosme (Gigondas).
I didn’t expect much beyond “interesting curiosity.”
Turns out, Rhône bubbles have way more history than I realized.
The wine itself
Light rosé in the glass, very fine mousse. Super clean and precise rather than flashy.
Tasting wise:
• Fresh quince and bergamot
• Raspberry fruit
• A subtle herbal note (thyme / garrigue)
• Dry, balanced, no dosage covering anything up
It’s not trying to be Champagne more like a Rhône wine that happens to sparkle. Paid €14 at the domaine, which felt like a steal for what it delivered.
Rhône sparkling = not one thing
That bottle sent me digging into Rhône sparkling wines in general, and I realized how fragmented (in a good way) this category is.
Northern Rhône:
• Saint Péray: One of France’s oldest sparkling appellations. Historically famous for traditional method bubbles made from Marsanne & Roussanne. Textural, vinous, more “serious” than festive. Almost forgotten today, but fascinating when you find one.
• Crémant de Die: Completely different vibe. Alpine freshness, lighter body, citrus and floral notes. Made from Clairette, Aligoté, sometimes a touch of Muscat. Dry, approachable, easy to drink.
Southern Rhône:
Sparkling wines tend to work best at higher altitude (Vinsobres, Ventoux, Luberon). Early picked Grenache actually works really well here, especially for Brut Nature or Extra Brut styles.
Why this matters
Rhône bubbles aren’t trying to compete with Champagne. They’re:
• Smaller production
• More terroir-driven
• Often better at the table than at midnight fireworks moments
And honestly, that’s kind of refreshing.
Curious now…
Anyone else here drinking Rhône sparkling wines?
• Saint Péray producers worth hunting down?
• Favorite Crémant de Die?
• Other off the radar Rhône bubbles I should try?
Always interested in expanding the list 🥂
