It wouldn’t be Emily in Paris without debriefs between plucky marketing executive Emily Cooper (Lily Collins) and her best friend Mindy (Ashley Park) over espressos or glasses of Sancerre. We’ve seen them traverse the cafés and restaurants of Paris for four seasons now. But in Season 5, Emily travels even farther for her daily nosh, as she makes Rome her new home.

She flits between lavish work lunches with her colleagues Sylvie (Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu), Luc (Bruno Gouery), and Julien (Samuel Arnold) and elegant date spots with her Italian beau, fashion scion Marcello Muratori (Eugenio Franceschini). It’s all in a day’s work for Emily as she heads up Agence Grateau’s Italian outpost.

“She followed her heart to a new city in search of fresh experiences and adventures with Marcello,” says Collins. “What began as a quick trip slowly turned into something that far exceeded her expectations. She went for the possibility of love and ended up staying for work as well.”

But Emily’s Italian adventure doesn’t end there — she and her friends also pop by Venice in the finale. “There is this vicarious armchair travel aspect to the series, and I really wanted to find a way to incorporate Venice into this season because I think there’s something magical and otherworldly about it,” says series creator Darren Star. “It’s hard to top Paris, and I wanted to go somewhere that’s equally iconic and transporting.”
