LUFKIN, Texas (KTRE) – The Salvation Army Corps in Lufkin distributed food boxes to families on Christmas Eve, providing holiday meals including chickens and turkeys to those in need.

The organization served 60 families during the Christmas Eve distribution, according to Captain Cavon Phillips. The food boxes included donations from Walmart, Sam’s Club and other local businesses, with special additions of chickens and turkeys for the holiday.

“Today is where we’re giving out food boxes,” Phillips said. “We were blessed with some chickens from Pilgrim’s and also some turkeys from Sam’s to be able to hand out today, to make it a little bit more special for the people here in community as they go into Christmas Day.”

The Salvation Army conducts weekly food distributions but made this one special for Christmas. The organization partners with the East Texas Food Bank to secure regular donations and reaches out directly to businesses for special occasions.

The Christmas Eve distribution came as the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle campaign concluded $20,000 short of its $75,000 goal. The campaign helps fund year-round services provided by the Salvation Army.

“The money that we collect help us all year round. It help us be able to pay our rent, to do rental assistance, and also utility assistance. It also help us provide meals when we have a shortage in donations or food,” Phillips said.

Phillips encouraged continued donations despite the campaign’s end, noting the funds support ongoing community assistance programs throughout the year.
