ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — A Duluth apartment building caught on fire on Christmas Day, displacing 13 people, Gwinnett County firefighters said.

Crews were called to MAA Pleasant Hill apartments off Pleasant Hill Road, where they saw flames coming from a second-floor balcony. Nobody was injured, but two apartments were badly damaged by fire and water.

A resident told firefighters that the fire started when they were cooking on the balcony. They tried to put out the flames, but the fire only grew.

The ten adults and three children affected are getting help from the American Red Cross and the apartment complex’s management company.

Firefighters remind the public not to cook on apartment balconies.
