I feel like I never see nomonomo talked about, or if it is, it’s definitely not on the mainstream “best of Chicago” lists. Maybe it’s a lack of PR. Maybe it’s intentionally flying under the radar. Maybe I’m just out of the loop on this one. Either way, it’s kind of wild how good this place is.

Selfishly, I don’t want it to get too popular. But realistically, it deserves the business and I want it to be around for a long time.

A few standouts from my visit:

Mentaiko Udon

I was genuinely thrilled to see this on the menu. I’ve been craving it since my trips to Japan and it fully delivered. Rich, briny, comforting, and exactly what I hoped it would be.

Vesper cocktail

Kombu-infused gin with an “oceanic rim.” If you like savory drinks, this is next level. Deep umami, slightly briny, insanely balanced. Easily my favorite cocktail I’ve had in Chicago to date.

Kani Scallop Roll

Total guilty pleasure. Finished with truffle aioli. Simple to pull off? Sure. But extremely satisfying and hits every time.

Sashimi Salad

Good, fresh, well executed. Not super memorable compared to everything else, but still solid.

Carbonara Udon

Haven’t tried it yet, but knowing the viral Tokyo version, I’m very excited to go back for it.

Also worth mentioning: the interior and exterior are stunning. Thoughtful, warm, and inviting without feeling overdesigned. I’m already excited to go back in the summer and sit near the windows.

Next visit goals are the omakase and the hamachi collar. If you’re into Japanese flavors, umami-forward cocktails, and places that feel special without being pretentious, this spot is absolutely worth your time. Really hoping it stays open for a long time.
