I’ve been obsessed with the "green mediterranean diet" research lately, especially since so many of us are looking for ways to crush visceral fat. But after digging into the actual science, there are a few "catches" regarding availability and safety that everyone should know before jumping in.

What’s the deal with "Duckweed"? (It’s not what you think)

The plant used in those famous liver fat studies isn't just random duckweed from a local pond. It’s a specific, proprietary strain of Wolffia globosa called Mankai.

The reason it’s such a "superfood" in the study is that it’s grown in strictly controlled hydroponic tanks. While common duckweed (Lemna minor) is a relative, all that clinical data on nutrient density and heavy metal safety is based specifically on this Mankai strain.

Is it actually better than Spirulina?

If you’re already taking your 2g of spirulina daily, here’s how Duckweed (Wolffia) stacks up:

  • Bioactive B12: This is huge. Unlike most plants that contain "pseudo-B12" (which our bodies cannot readily use), Mankai has been proven to contain actual bioactive Vitamin B12.

  • The "Green Med" Effect: The study showed that swapping red meat for these shakes (plus walnuts and green tea) significantly melted visceral and liver fat.

  • Complete Protein: It’s a high-quality leafy green protein with all 9 essential amino acids.

The frustrating part: Where do you even buy it?

Searching for "duckweed protein for sale" right now is a bit of a nightmare. You won't find much on Amazon (maybe a few products like Vinatura Duckweed Powder Superfood or I Am Joy…) for two reasons:

  • Supply chain drama: The main producer, Hinoman, recently went through a restructuring. Their US site is currently offline as they transition to a B2B focus.

  • The "Water Lentil" Alternative: You might see products labeled as "Water Lentils." These are great for sustainability and protein, but just know they aren't technically the same species used in the Israeli studies.

A HUGE word of caution (Please read!)

If you’re desperate to try this, NEVER try to harvest duckweed from your backyard pond or a fish aquarium to eat.

  • Bio-accumulation: Duckweed acts like a sponge. It sucks up everything in the water, lead, arsenic, pesticides, you name it.

  • Toxicity: Unless it’s "Food Grade" or "GRAS" certified and grown in a clean-water facility, it’s risky. It’s great for your goldfish, but not for your smoothie unless it’s professionally processed.

It’s an amazing "future food," but the high-quality supply is super tight right now. If you do find a brand selling Wolffia globosa or Water Lentil powder, make sure they can provide a COA (Certificate of Analysis) for heavy metals!

Yeahhhh….I’m just going to keep eating plants and not sweat all the weird hacks and new diets that pop up.

Also read this as “dickweed powder”.
