Police in Guelph are investigating after a compromised Visa card was used to purchase two bottles of French wine worth $2,100 each.

A 70-year-old woman called police in late November after her bank contacted her about unusual purchases on her card. That’s when she discovered someone had withdrawn $3,500 cash and used the card to purchase two bottles of Chateau Margaux wine at an LCBO in the city’s south end.

Scott Tracey is a spokesperson for the Guelph Police Service and says at first, when he saw the amount of alcohol purchased, officers thought multiple bottles of alcohol must have been purchased using the stolen card.

“The wine that was purchased is very unusual and not that many places where someone’s going to pull out a $2,000 bottle of wine. I don’t think so,” he told CBC News.

“Certainly if you recall someone who maybe matched that description [of the suspect] and had this very expensive wine, we would ask that obviously the public would give us a call and pass on whatever information they’re able to.”

The photos from LCBO surveillance cameras shows a man with a beard wearing a black tuque, black jacket, black pants, black boots, a light coloured shirt and a scarf. He was using wireless headphones and carried his phone when entering and while shopping in the store.

Anyone with information about the investigation is asked to contact Guelph police or Crime Stoppers.
