FIESOLE – Olive oil, the Gods’ gift to the Mediterranean that science guarantees prolongs life, will become scarce this year.

The very poor olive harvests this year in Italy, as well as in much of southern Europe, threaten not only the continuity of some farms, but also reduce the chance of finding it at a good price.

Olive oil prices are exploding, and consumers around the world will likely pay more for this Mediterranean-based product, whose values are championed by both “nutritionalists” and nutritionists.

In Italy, Tuscany and Obria, whose hills have produced an extra virgin oil with delicate aromas for centuries, have been particularly affected by the consequences of the very bad weather that dominated this summer.

In Spain, where half of the world’s olive oil is produced, a combination of drought and some bacteria is threatening to halve production this year.

In southern Italy, there is another type of bacteria from South America that is destroying olive trees.
